Thank you so much for a sensitive and heartfelt article. Your sentiment about classifications being hollow feels true in my gut.

What do you call a female with a Bengali father (Bangladeshi after the partition of India) and Nordic mother (Finnish but not so simple: even that is broken down into half Karelian and half indigenous Sámi) brought up in London? I really struggle with classification. Generally, I use “mixed heritage” when filling in a form and “beige” when I’m feeling facetious. On a particularly brave day I go for describing myself as “me”.
